Contadora is the best known island of the Pearl Islands archipelago, the original site of CBS's survivor series. The island is less than 2 miles long but has 11 beaches. With Villa Montecielo situated on the most beautiful of them all, you won't have far to walk.

Despite being a small tropical island, it has almost every facility you could want. There are restaurants, a great dive shop (www.coral-dreams.com), local mini supermarkets which stock a wide range of food, wine and spirits. It also has a medical center. There is good cell phone coverage. About the only that is missing is a bank or ATM, so you need to bring enough cash with you. Panama uses US dollars as its currency and currently even provides visitors with free travel insurance and a mutli-lingual health help line.

Fishing trips can be arranged locally. Sailing trips and sunset voyages can also be booked on a 44ft catamaran (www.catamarancharterrebelle.com). For whale watching trips see www.whalewatchingpanama.com
